The South Florida Internet
Crimes Against Children (SFLICAC) Task Force is a multi agency
and multi jurisdictional effort to combat the on-line
enticement of children and teenagers. The SFLICAC is
comprised of law enforcement and judicial officials that
encompass the Federal, State and Local Law Enforcement arenal. It is this robust
partnership that affords a succinct and comprehensive strategy
required to enforce and suppress the illegal use of the
Internet.
In 1995, the South Florida
Law Enforcement community made a decision to partner in an
effort to respond to the potential use of the Internet for
unlawful purposes. In 1998, the Justice Appropriations Act directed the Office of
Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) to create a
national network of state and local law enforcement task
forces in an effort to investigate cases of child sexual
exploitation. As
a result of the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force Program came to be. Tthe
Broward Sheriff''s Office applied for the grant and was
successful in obtaining the first round of funding. The Broward
Sheriff''s Office (BSO) has been a recipient of this funding
since the program's inception in 1998, and has continued to be
the administrator and fiscal manager.
The South Florida Internet
Crimes Against Children Task Force ICAC, formerly
known as Law Enforcement Against Child Harm (LEACH), has
earned the title as a tier one program, and its continued
successes have contributed to the expansion of the SFICAC Task
Force. Currently, there are over
30 active affiliates in the South
Florida law enforcement community
and the Task Force members continue to strive to expand its
partnerships and its positive proactive response to protecting
our children and teenagers from on-line predators.
The task force keeps a record of our activities throughout the year. The following table lists some of our success for the year including the total number of arrests, number of referrals (Cybertips) from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), children victims saved and identified, people who traveled to meet children (travelers), search warrants, repeat Florida sex offenders, community presentations and community members attending the presentations.
